OD&D [Ocean D&D] - Appendix Nautical
OD&D stands for Ocean D&D.
Water is the ἀρχή.
It doesn‘t get much more original than that.
There is no world beyond the blue.
Land is a myth or fish tale.
OD&D [Ocean D&D] is a campaign I plan on running soon. It evolved from this post on the Stomatopod class.
In OD&D you play as an underwater creature. Your home is the reef, the ocean's first proto-societal community. There is no rigid structure there but a complex web of relations based on the exchange of resources and favors. Curiosity and the needs of the reef community drive you to leave and go on adventures.
The ocean is endless. There are caverns, chasms, reefs, rocks, mysterious wrecks and structures, and the open sea to explore. Dangers include all kinds of marine life, environmental hazards, and remnant artifacts.
You can find the full player document here.
Appendix Nautical
There was some chatter about boring appendices on the gay beholder server recently. So here what came to mind when I thought of mine for OD&D [Ocean D&D]:
- The Mountain in the Sea (2022) by Ray Nayler
- Other Minds (2016) by Peter Godfrey-Smith
- Subnautica Games (2018, 2026) by Unknown Worlds
- Children of Time Series (2015-2026) by Adrian Tchaikovsky
- Blue Planet RPG (1997, 2012, 2025) by biohazard games
- Scuba Dives and Snorkeling
- The rivers, lakes and seas I grew up on
- "Sur l'eau" in Minima Moralia - Reflexionen aus dem beschädigten Leben (1951) by Theodor W. Adorno 1
