Super Adventure 7: Return to the Howling Tower (Play Report)

Super Adventures are a local tradition of the Gay Beholder OSR server. Players bring characters from all kinds of worlds and rulesets for some multiverse madness. 1 This is a short writeup for Jay0's SupAd from this weekend. Jay0 really outdid himself, this SupAd worked in some of the deep lore earlier games had produced.

The Setup & LORE

This was the pitch by Jay:

Declassified D-Day reports tell a story that was never meant to be read. On June 6th, 1944, something went wrong. Amid the beaches and bombardments, strange figures began appearing across the battlefield: adventurers from impossible kingdoms, soldiers from futures that had not yet happened, monsters from worlds that had never existed, and occultists who seemed to know exactly what was coming. The Nazis had opened something beneath Normandy. Something they called the Multiversal Egg. The war ended. History moved on. The reports were buried. But the Egg never really closed.

Now Timeline 3 is coming apart.

The President of the United States and Remus, Joseph R. Biden, and the Giant Wolf Carnifex have been notified of another Multiversal Egg found in the bathroom of a Burger King off Route 30. The government then hired occultists, esotericists, podcasters, UFO researchers, disgraced academics, internet schizos, and anyone else sufficiently obsessed with forbidden knowledge to investigate. At its center stands the mountain keep of Sorven of the Seven Lights, a Black Magus whose name appears in occult manuscripts found only in the Special Collection of Miskatonic University. Sorven has allied himself with the perfidious remnants of the time-traveling Nazi occultists who opened the Multiversal Egg on D-Day, 1944. Together they have occupied the Howling Tower. Something is being assembled there.

Intercepted SIGINT keeps repeating three words: ORANGBERRY. EVILBERRY. MONARCH.

D-Day was only the beginning.

This Super Adventure was a direct sequel to the one Idraluna ran in August where the super adventurers joined the attack on Normandy. During the third drop into Normandy OrangeBerry the bunny seer from Bunnies & Burrows was slain. OrangeBerry had previously joined delves into the Tower of Collage where the rabbit consumed some nootropic drugs and was fused with the Monarch AI.

Now somehow the bunny returned... in the Howling Tower of the infamous Arduin.

This is the shit for me. Super Adventures have already produced some amazing narratives. I really liked how this one picked up the strands. And because I am crazy I played all three sessions even though I had to get up at 4 am for the last one.

This won't be a complete collection of the events but some loose thoughts quickly put together.

Session 1

The Squad:

Events:

Biden and Harris sent us off. Marcel insisted on driving his Peugeot through the dungeon. Meatface hovered outside while Glower and the Hulk were carried by the Balrog who was also flying. The rest was sat into the tiny car. We explored some rooms and hallways. A lot of nazi imagery mixed with bunnnies and hints towards cybernetic corruption. We defaced some of it as best as we could. Things got a bit tense when we encountered a red dragon. However it was easily slaughtered by Bogdan the Bad and the others in a display of cinematic heroism while Marcel waited in the car. A brass box yielded a grimoire that turned Dash the Cyborg insane. We continued driving and almost parked the Peugeot in a pit filled with giant arduinic giant nazi weasels. Finally we found some big loot stashed with some jellied pseudomilk eels. Driving further south, Marcel felt the need for speed and put the pedal to the metal. Expertly, with a 15 % chance, the car drifted around the corner and slammed into a nazi robot, slicing it in half (thank you Arduin crit tables). The squad returned having done some good progress.

Session 2

The Squad:

Events:

The second team continued exploration into the howling nazi tower. Biden and Kamala sent them off. This team got into a lot of trouble when it searched a strangely shaped room (all of them were) and was ambushed by a team of nazi troubleshooters. Uale went down immediately, the others fought hard. Pvt. Tintenfisch Jr. was parachuted in to replace Uale. When the nazis had been crushed it turned out that Uale was regenerating. (I forgot about the Ring of Regeneration Uale had found in 1k Statues) Tintenfisch Jr. was extracted. As the team lacked any characters with an understanding of airlock keypads we decided to move south. Opening a room the team, was greeted by 15 skeletal robots. Three brave souls were lost: Bayonnetta was slashed open, Burnie Cinders self-immolated, and Wrench's head was ripped off. Still, the survivors found some loot. Lerden got his hands on a sword with 6 wishes and the shield Jaws (bites like an 8 HD monster).

Session 3

The Squad:

Events:

In order to find the evil heart of the howling tower Nome meditated on the caverns. The team tried to go as deep as possible directly. There was a zero gravity shaft leading down and we descended. We ended up crawling/floating through long dark vents. We would have perished quickly, Nome actually did at one point, had it not been for Lerden's wishing sword. Our delve was of little success. In the end we decided to retreat as we were running out of time and Lerden spent the last of his wishes:

"I wish for EvilBerry to become our good friend GoodBerry the bunny again".

A bunny appeared and hopped out of the dungeon with us. The screen freezes and the credits roll.

Did we accomplish the mission? Who knows? All I know is that GoodBerry lives and that Tintenfisch Jr. learned to love firearms.

Thoughts

I love Super Adventures and I will sacrifice a lot of sleep to participate in them. The weaving together of different characters from various campaigns creates something special. They are best when the characters come from existing campaigns or old ones. Our server is very lucky to have players with some long living characters. So on the one hand I'd like to contribute by running games that provide future Super Adventurers but also by running games that can have veteran characters from Super Adventures drop in. In any case Super Adventures are and will be having an impact on what and how I run games on the GB server in the future. Right now I am still enjoying Ocean D&D very much, we haven't even played 20 sessions, but when I eventually start something new I might go for some OD&D with a loose and wild setting or something that produces interesting characters to be transformed in adventures one might call super.

There isn't much else to say.

Thank you everyone for being super!
